The Question Durkheim Was Actually Trying to Answer

When Emile Durkheim introduced the concept of the social fact in his 1895 work The Rules of Sociological Method, he was not simply adding a new term to the discipline. He was making an argument about what sociology is, and why it deserves to exist as a science separate from psychology and philosophy.

His central claim was this: society is not just a collection of individuals. Something emerges from collective life that is greater than the sum of its parts. These emergent realities: things that society produces and that individuals then inherit, are what he called social facts.

The Definition, Properly Understood

Durkheim defined a social fact as any way of acting, thinking, or feeling that is external to the individual, that exercises constraint over individual behaviour, and that is general across society. Three words are doing the heavy lifting here: external, constraint, and general.

External means the social fact does not originate within you. You were born into a language, a religion, a set of moral expectations. You did not choose them. They pre-existed you and they will outlast you. They come from outside.

Constraint does not necessarily mean force. It means that if you deviate from the social fact, you feel resistance, from others, sometimes from your own conscience, which society has shaped. When someone does not stand for the national anthem in a cinema hall, the looks they receive are the constraint made visible.

General means the social fact is widespread across a society, not just characteristic of one individual. The fact that millions of Indians feel acute anxiety about board exam results, anxiety that shapes their life choices, their sleep, their self-worth, is general. That is what makes it a sociological phenomenon rather than a personal psychology problem.

Types of Social Facts

Durkheim distinguished between two broad types. The first are material social facts: things that have a physical or institutional form. Legal codes, architectural forms, cities, roads. These are relatively easy to see.

The second are non-material social facts, and these are where sociology gets interesting. Collective conscience, collective representations, social currents. These are the shared beliefs, values, and moral frameworks that hold societies together. You cannot touch the norm that says a daughter-in-law must adjust when she enters a new household, but millions of Indian women feel its weight every day.

Why This Concept Was Controversial

Durkheim's critics, then and now, have argued that talking about society as if it has a life independent of individuals is a kind of philosophical sleight of hand. Individuals exist. Society, they argue, is just a word we use for the patterns those individuals create.

This is the position of methodological individualism, the idea that all social phenomena can ultimately be explained by reference to individual actions and motivations. Weber held a version of this view, which is precisely why the Durkheim-Weber debate is so central to Paper I.

Durkheim's counter-argument was empirical, not just philosophical. His study of suicide rates, which should be the most individual of acts, showed that suicide varied systematically with social integration and moral regulation. That variation could not be explained by individual psychology alone. Something social was at work.

India Reality Check

Consider the pressure on young Indians to pursue engineering or medicine as a career. No individual person created this norm. No law mandates it. Yet it shapes the choices of millions of families, drives a coaching industry worth thousands of crores, and causes measurable psychological distress, the ASER reports and NCRB data on student suicides both reflect its consequences.

This is a social fact operating at scale. It is external to any individual student, it constrains their choices, and it is demonstrably general across large sections of Indian society. Durkheim would recognise it instantly. The challenge for the aspirant is to be able to name it as such in an answer, and then explain what it reveals about the relationship between individual aspiration and social structure in India today.

What This Means for Your Answer Writing

A 10-mark question on social facts is not asking you to recite a definition. It is asking whether you understand why the concept exists and what intellectual work it does. The best answers will: define the concept precisely, explain its significance for sociology as a discipline, distinguish it from psychological facts, and illustrate it with a specific and well-chosen Indian example.

The distinction between material and non-material social facts is also frequently tested. Know it clearly. And know the criticism, because UPSC rewards students who can state a concept and then honestly complicate it.

Social facts are not just a topic to clear. They are a way of seeing, the foundational lens through which all of Durkheim's later work, including his study of religion and his analysis of suicide, makes sense. Understand this concept deeply, and half of Paper I becomes easier to read.
