When India Was the World's Classroom

What if everything you were taught about education (the desks, the bells, the textbooks, the exams) was not progress, but a replacement?

Not an upgrade. A substitution.

India today runs one of the largest education systems in the world. Over 250 million children in schools. Thousands of universities. Millions of degrees printed every year. By the numbers, it looks like a success story.

But here is the question nobody really asks: what did we have before all of this? What were we before the classrooms, the curriculums, the marks and the merit lists?

Because here is what the history books quietly skip over. Before Britain arrived with its colonial schooling, before Macaulay sat down to write his infamous minute, India was not an uneducated civilisation waiting to be enlightened. It was the opposite.

For over three thousand years, India was where the world came to learn.

Students travelled from China, Greece, Persia, and Korea. Not to teach us, but to sit at our feet. Our universities were the largest on earth. Our mathematicians gave the world the number zero. Our surgeons were performing reconstructive surgery while Europe was still explaining illness through evil spirits.

So, what happened?

How did the civilisation that built Nalanda (a university so vast it housed ten thousand students and two thousand teachers) end up with a system where millions of children cannot read a simple sentence by the time they finish primary school?

That is the story we are going to tell. Not the sanitised textbook version. The real one.

And it begins not with a classroom, but with a boy, a forest, and an old man who believed that the purpose of education was not to fill a mind, but to set it on fire.

The Gurukul

Close your eyes and forget everything you associate with school. Forget the uniform. Forget the roll call. Forget the forty-five-minute periods and the teacher standing behind a desk reading from a book she has read a hundred times before.

Now imagine this.

You are eight years old. It is still dark outside. You wake up before sunrise, not because an alarm forced you to, but because the day has already begun at the Gurukul and falling behind means falling behind in life. You bathe in the river, collect firewood, tend to the cows, and then, only then, does learning begin.

No textbook is placed in front of you. Your Guru speaks, and you listen. Not passively, the way students sit in classrooms today staring at whiteboards. You listen the way you listen to something that matters. Because here, knowledge is not a subject. It is a relationship.

This was the Gurukul. And for over three thousand years, it was how India educated its children.

The word itself tells you everything. Guru means teacher, but its deeper meaning is 'one who dispels darkness.' Kula means family or home. A Gurukul was not a school in any modern sense. It was the Guru's household, and when a student entered it, he entered as a member of the family. He ate with the Guru, worked alongside him, observed him in moments of both wisdom and ordinary life. The learning was total and it was continuous.

According to historian A.L. Basham in his landmark work The Wonder That Was India, the Gurukul system was built on a philosophy that education could not be separated from living. The student did not go to school and then come home to real life. The school was real life.

The curriculum was vast in a way that would surprise most people today. Yes, the Vedas were central. Sacred texts were memorised with extraordinary precision, passed down orally across generations without a single word changing, a feat of human memory that modern neuroscientists still find remarkable. But the Gurukul was never only about scripture.

Depending on the student's inclination and the Guru's expertise, education covered mathematics, astronomy, grammar, logic, medicine, warfare, statecraft, music, and philosophy. Kautilya, who would go on to write the Arthashastra (one of the most sophisticated texts on governance and economics ever produced), was educated in exactly this tradition. So was Panini, whose grammar of Sanskrit, the Ashtadhyayi, is considered by modern linguists to be one of the greatest intellectual achievements in human history.

The relationship between Guru and Shishya (student) was the heart of the entire system. It was built on something that no modern education system has truly managed to replicate: trust. The Guru gave knowledge freely. There were no fees in the transactional sense. At the end of his education, the student offered Guru Dakshina, a gesture of gratitude that could be anything from a gift to a service, given according to what the student could afford. Knowledge was never withheld because someone could not pay.

But it would be dishonest to only tell the beautiful parts of this story.

The Gurukul system carried a deep and troubling flaw at its core. Access was not equal. In practice, the system was shaped by caste in ways that excluded large portions of the population entirely. Shudras and those outside the varna system were barred from Vedic education. The knowledge that the Gurukul celebrated as sacred was simultaneously kept out of reach for millions of people based on the family they were born into.

This is the contradiction that sits at the heart of ancient Indian education. A system capable of producing Chanakya and Aryabhata, of training minds that shaped civilisations, was also a system that told an entire class of people that learning was not for them.

We should hold both of these truths at the same time. The brilliance and the injustice. Because an honest story demands it.

Not Just Spirituality

There is a story that is told about ancient India, usually with good intentions, that goes something like this: India was a deeply spiritual civilisation, rich in philosophy and religion, but it was the West that gave the world science.

It is a comfortable story. It is also almost entirely wrong.

The same civilisation that produced the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita also produced the world's first decimal system, calculated the circumference of the earth with remarkable accuracy, performed surgical procedures that Europe would not attempt for another thousand years, and built cities with underground drainage systems while most of the ancient world was still figuring out where to put its waste.

Ancient India was not spiritual instead of scientific. It was both, simultaneously, and it saw no contradiction between the two.

Let us be specific, because specifics are what this story deserves.

In 499 AD, a mathematician and astronomer named Aryabhata wrote a text called the Aryabhatiya. In it, he proposed that the earth rotates on its own axis, that the apparent movement of stars is caused by the earth's rotation, and he calculated the length of a solar year as 365.358 days. The actual value is 365.256 days. He was writing this in the fifth century. Copernicus would make similar arguments in Europe nearly a thousand years later and be called a revolutionary for it.

Aryabhata also worked extensively with the concept of zero, not merely as a placeholder but as a number with its own properties. The mathematician Brahmagupta would later, in 628 AD, define zero formally and establish rules for arithmetic involving it. This is not a minor footnote.

Every smartphone, every algorithm, every satellite in orbit exists because someone in ancient India thought carefully about nothing.

Then there is Sushruta.

Writing somewhere between 600 and 800 BC, Sushruta produced the Sushruta Samhita, a medical text that described over 300 surgical procedures and 120 surgical instruments. He wrote detailed instructions for cataract surgery, for setting fractures, for performing what we would today call rhinoplasty (reconstructive surgery of the nose). He understood the importance of hygiene in surgery, of sterilisation, of post-operative care. British surgeons would travel to India in the 18th century specifically to learn nasal reconstruction techniques from Indian practitioners who had been preserving Sushruta's methods for centuries.

In the field of linguistics, Panini's Ashtadhyayi, written around 400 BC, described the grammar of Sanskrit in 3,959 sutras (rules). It is so precise, so complete, and so systematically structured that modern linguists and computer scientists have compared it to formal language theory, the mathematical framework that underlies modern programming languages. The American linguist Leonard Bloomfield called it one of the greatest monuments of human intelligence.

And then there are the cities.

Mohenjo-daro and Harappa, built over four thousand years ago, had grid-planned streets, standardised brick sizes, public baths, and an underground sewage system more sophisticated than anything found in contemporary Rome or Greece. This was not luck or accident. It was the product of a civilisation that studied, planned, calculated, and built with intention.

All of this knowledge lived inside the Gurukul tradition and later inside the great universities. It was not separate from the spiritual education. It was part of the same whole. The ancient Indian mind did not divide the world into science and religion and put them in separate rooms. It asked one question of everything: what is true?

That question produced Aryabhata. It produced Sushruta. It produced Panini.

And then, for reasons we will come to, India largely stopped asking it.

Takshashila & Nalanda

In 2024, the QS World University Rankings placed no Indian university in the global top 150. It is a number that gets quoted often, usually with a mixture of shame and defensiveness, followed by debates about funding, faculty, and government policy.

But here is what that conversation almost always misses.

India did not fail to build great universities. India built the greatest universities the ancient world had ever seen. And then watched them burn.

This is the story of Takshashila and Nalanda. Two institutions so extraordinary that even calling them universities feels like an understatement. They were not just places of learning. They were the intellectual centres of an entire civilisation, drawing the finest minds from across Asia and beyond, and producing graduates who shaped empires, rewrote medicine, and redefined how human beings understood the world around them.

Takshashila

Located in what is today northwestern Pakistan, Takshashila (also known as Taxila) is widely regarded as the world's first university. It was established around 700 BC, roughly two thousand years before Oxford, and at its height it offered education in 68 subjects including medicine, law, military science, astronomy, commerce, music, and the Vedas.

What made Takshashila genuinely remarkable was not just what it taught but who it drew. Students arrived from Mesopotamia, Greece, Arabia, China, and from every corner of the Indian subcontinent. There were no formal admission ceremonies, no entrance examinations in the modern sense. A student arrived, demonstrated his seriousness, and found a teacher. The learning was structured around the teacher's expertise and the student's commitment. Nothing more, nothing less.

The alumni list alone tells you everything about what this place produced. Chanakya, the political philosopher whose Arthashastra remains one of the most studied texts on statecraft in the world, studied and later taught at Takshashila. Charaka, whose Charaka Samhita became the foundational text of Ayurvedic medicine, was educated in this tradition. Panini, whose grammar of Sanskrit stunned the modern world with its mathematical precision, came from this lineage. The Greek ambassador Megasthenes, who visited India during the Mauryan period, wrote with evident awe about the sophistication of Indian scholarship he encountered.

Takshashila survived invasions, political upheavals, and the rise and fall of multiple empires. It endured for over a thousand years. And then, in the fifth century AD, the Huna invasions finally broke it. The teachers scattered. The students dispersed. The institution that had quietly shaped the ancient world simply ceased to exist.

Nalanda

If Takshashila was the world's first university, Nalanda was its greatest.

Established in the fifth century AD in what is today Bihar, Nalanda was not just large. It was staggering in its scale and ambition. At its peak it housed ten thousand students and two thousand teachers within a single campus. It offered free education, free accommodation, and free food to every student who could pass its entrance examination, an oral test administered at the gates that was said to be so rigorous that only one in three applicants succeeded.

The Chinese monk Xuanzang, who traveled to India in the seventh century AD and spent years studying at Nalanda, left behind detailed accounts of what he found there. He described a campus of towering buildings, lecture halls, meditation spaces, and libraries spread across multiple structures. The atmosphere, he wrote, was one of constant intellectual activity. Debates ran through the day and into the night. Teachers were expected to defend their knowledge publicly, and students were trained not just to absorb information but to interrogate it.

The subjects taught at Nalanda went far beyond religion. Theology and Buddhist philosophy were central, but the curriculum also included logic, grammar, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, and what we might today call political science. Students came from Korea, Japan, China, Tibet, Indonesia, Persia, and Turkey. Nalanda was, in the truest sense, an international university operating at a time when most of the world had not conceived of such a thing.

Its library, known as Dharmaganj (Treasury of Truth), was spread across three buildings. Contemporary accounts suggest it contained hundreds of thousands of manuscripts. Texts on every subject imaginable, preserved, copied, and expanded over generations of scholarship.

And then, in 1193 AD, a military commander named Bakhtiyar Khilji arrived with his army.

The destruction of Nalanda is one of the most painful episodes in the history of human knowledge. Khilji's forces killed the monks, drove out the students, and set fire to the library. According to historical accounts, the manuscripts burned for three months. Three months. The scale of what was lost is almost impossible to calculate. Centuries of accumulated knowledge in medicine, mathematics, astronomy, philosophy and countless other fields, gone.

The Tibetan historian Taranatha, writing later, described scholars fleeing with whatever manuscripts they could carry. Some of that knowledge survived in Tibet, preserved by refugees who had escaped the flames. Most did not.

When the smoke finally cleared, India had lost not just a building or even a collection of books. It had lost an institution that had taken seven hundred years to build, that had educated generations of the finest minds in Asia, and that had made India the destination for anyone in the ancient world who was serious about learning.

The manuscripts burned for three months. The scale of what was lost is almost impossible to calculate.

It would take India another eight hundred years to build anything remotely comparable.

And by the time it tried, someone else had arrived with very different ideas about what education was supposed to do.

Women & Knowledge

There is a moment in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad that most history textbooks never mention.

A great philosophical assembly has been called. The sage Yajnavalkya, considered the most brilliant mind of his age, stands before a gathering of scholars and kings. He has answered every question put to him with such authority that the room has fallen into a kind of awed silence. He believes the debate is over.

Then a woman stands up.

Her name is Gargi Vachaknavi. She is a philosopher, a scholar, and she is not impressed. She challenges Yajnavalkya with a series of questions so precise, so penetrating, that he struggles to answer them. At one point, according to the text, he warns her to stop or her head will shatter from the depth of the inquiry. It is a moment that reads less like philosophy and more like a man rattled by a woman who knows more than he expected.

Gargi was not an exception or an anomaly. She was part of a tradition.

In the Vedic period, women who pursued learning were known as Brahmavadinis, women who discoursed on Brahman, on the deepest questions of existence. Maitreyi, one of the two wives of Yajnavalkya himself, was a philosopher in her own right. When her husband offered to divide his wealth between his two wives before leaving for a life of renunciation, Maitreyi's response was recorded for posterity. She asked him: if I had all the wealth in the world, would it make me immortal? When he said no, she said then what use is it to me? Teach me instead what you know.

Lopamudra, Apala, Ghosa, Viswawara. These are names that appear in the Rigveda itself as composers of hymns. Not as subjects of hymns. As composers. Women who contributed directly to the texts that would become the foundation of an entire civilisation's spiritual and intellectual life.

And yet.

Somewhere between this Vedic tradition and the medieval period, something shifted. The access that women had to formal learning began to narrow. The Manusmriti, which gained influence over several centuries, placed increasing restrictions on women's independence and by extension their education. The Brahmavadini tradition did not disappear overnight, but it became rarer, more exceptional, less the norm and more the remarkable individual story.

By the time colonialism arrived, the education of women across most of India had been reduced to preparation for domestic life. The philosophers had become invisible. Their names survived only in texts that very few people were reading.

This erasure matters because it tells us something important. The problem with ancient Indian education was never that it could not imagine an educated woman. It imagined Gargi. It recorded her words. It remembered her name across three thousand years.

The problem was that it chose, over time, not to build a system that made more of her possible.

That choice would echo for centuries. It still does.

Why It Worked (and Where It Failed)

Every education system is built on a belief. A belief about what a human being is, what they are capable of, and what they are ultimately for.

The modern system believes, broadly, that a human being is a future worker. Education exists to prepare that worker. You study, you get a degree, you get a job. The transaction is clear. The purpose is economic. Whether this makes for a full human life is not really the system's concern.

Ancient India believed something entirely different.

The Gurukul and the great universities it fed into were built on the idea that education served four purposes simultaneously, mirroring the four aims of human life that Indian philosophy called the Purusharthas. Dharma, the understanding of one's duty and ethics. Artha, the practical knowledge needed to sustain oneself and contribute to society. Kama, the cultivation of creativity, beauty, and the full range of human experience. And Moksha, the pursuit of ultimate understanding, of truth itself.

Notice what this framework does. It refuses to separate the practical from the philosophical. It refuses to treat knowledge as purely vocational or purely spiritual. A student learning statecraft was also learning ethics. A student learning medicine was also learning the nature of the body in relation to the cosmos. Nothing was taught in isolation because nothing in life exists in isolation.

This is why the Guru Shishya relationship was so central. A textbook can transfer information. Only a human being can model wisdom. The Guru was not simply a subject matter expert. He was a living demonstration of what an educated life looked like. The student did not just learn what the Guru knew. He observed how the Guru thought, how he made decisions, how he handled uncertainty, how he treated other people. This kind of learning cannot be replicated in a forty-five-minute period.

The oral tradition that carried this system deserves particular attention. For centuries, vast bodies of knowledge were transmitted without being written down, through a system of memorisation so precise that texts like the Rigveda have survived thousands of years with virtually no textual corruption. Modern linguists who have studied this tradition describe it as one of the most sophisticated mnemonic systems ever developed. Patterns of recitation, cross-checking, and group verification ensured that not a syllable was lost.

And yet for all its brilliance, the system carried within it the seeds of its own limitations.

The very reverence for tradition that made oral transmission so precise also made the system resistant to new ideas. Knowledge that had been passed down through generations acquired a kind of sacred weight that made questioning it feel like sacrilege. Innovation happened, as we have seen with Aryabhata and Sushruta, but it happened despite the system as much as because of it.

The exclusion of lower castes was not a peripheral flaw. It was a structural one. A system that locked out the majority of its own population from its highest forms of knowledge was, by definition, operating at a fraction of its potential. How many Aryabhatas never got to study the stars because of the family they were born into? How many Susrutas never learned surgery because the texts were kept from them? We will never know. That is precisely the point.

And the dependence on the Guru created its own fragility. When the Gurus were killed, when the universities were burned, when the lineages were broken, there was no written institutional infrastructure strong enough to survive. Nalanda fell and took centuries of knowledge with it because too much had lived only in human minds and in manuscripts that burned.

A system that brilliant, and that fragile, was always one invasion away from silence.

The Turn

So here is where we stand.

A civilisation that produced Aryabhata and Chanakya. That built Takshashila when most of the world did not have a word for university. That sent graduates across Asia who would go on to shape empires, rewrite medicine, and expand the boundaries of human knowledge. That imagined Gargi and recorded her words. That built Nalanda, let it grow for seven hundred years, and then watched it burn in a matter of days.

This was not a civilisation that needed to be taught how to learn.

It was a civilisation that had already figured out something profound about the relationship between knowledge and life, even if it had not yet figured out how to make that knowledge available to everyone within its own borders.

What happened next did not come from within.

It came in ships.

And with it came a man with a very specific idea about what education was for, what language it should happen in, and what kind of human being it should produce at the end.

His name was Thomas Babington Macaulay. He had never visited India when he sat down to write the document that would quietly dismantle three thousand years of a civilisation's relationship with its own mind.

He did not need to.

He had already made up his mind.
