The results are already here, and they are remarkable. In the Netherlands, a company called Mosa Meat grew a beef burger entirely in a laboratory, without a single cow being slaughtered. In medicine, scientists are engineering microbes that can produce insulin more efficiently than traditional methods, making diabetes treatment cheaper and more accessible. Researchers at Wake Forest Institute have successfully grown small human organs in labs, bringing us closer to a future where a patient waiting for a kidney transplant does not have to wait for a matching donor to die. In energy, companies are developing algae-based biofuels that could one day power aircraft without a drop of fossil fuel. These are not future possibilities. They are happening right now.

The Part That Should Make You Stop and Think

But here is where it gets truly staggering, and most people have no idea this has already happened.

A technology called CRISPR now allows scientists to edit the DNA of a human embryo. Not a grown adult. Not a patient in a hospital. An embryo, before a person is even born. This means we are no longer just treating disease. We are approaching the ability to decide, in advance, what traits a future human being will carry. Intelligence. Height. Immunity to certain illnesses. In 2018, a scientist named He Jiankui in China announced the birth of twin girls whose DNA had been edited before birth to make them resistant to HIV. The world was not ready for that conversation. He was later sentenced to prison, but the damage to our collective sense of certainty was already done. The technology had moved faster than our laws, our ethics, and our ability to agree on what is right. We are not heading toward a world where humans can be designed. Research funding remains inconsistent, regulatory frameworks around gene editing are not clearly defined, and public awareness is almost nonexistent. India has the minds for this revolution. What it needs now is the infrastructure, investment, and honest policy conversation to match.

Synthetic biology can reshape healthcare, fix our environment, and solve our energy crisis. The science is extraordinary. But the CRISPR question sits at the centre of all of it and reminds us that the most important decisions ahead are not scientific. They are deeply human. The question was never just whether we can design life. It is whether we are wise enough to decide when we should.
